Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver is an alloy that's 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. It's more durable and stronger than pure silver, so is often used to make jewelry.
KEEP SILVER PRETTY
After being newly purchased or freshly cleaned, how do we keep silver pretty? Touch/wear it more often. Frequent handling of the surface dramatically reduces the development of tarnish. Pieces that are worn every day rarely need polishing.
STORAGE
Note that “…silver tarnishes faster in areas with higher levels of humidity and air pollution. This is why it’s ideal to store silver jewelry in air-restricted places (such as reclosable plastic baggy or airtight jewelry boxes), not out in the open on top of your dresser.”
TARNISH VS. PATINA
These are not the same thing! Tarnish is a dull film on metal. It progresses from yellowish to black and usually covers the surface of the metal in uneven patterns.” Patina (or oxidized finished) is when the darks get darker and the lights get brighter. It develops over time (when worn often) or is intentionally applied in the jewelry-making process.
CLEANING (here are a few different options)
1. Gently soak it in a solution of warm water + mild dish soap (a few drops). Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean crevices. Rinse thoroughly + dry with a soft cloth.
2. Gently rub your piece with a soft microfiber cloth.
3. Use a chemical liquid tarnish remover for immediate results (avoid stones and mixed metals).
4. If you want ME to do it (whether WiRealm of your other jewelry), bring it to me! See our Repairs Page.
